Silvermans - The last of the local discount stores.
Silverman’s department stores have been called “the last of the local discount stores.” The description fits.

Unlike larger chains, Silverman’s department stores are truly focused on our surrounding communities. We aim to carry everything our customers need and want — including specialty items they can’t find anywhere else — and to offer it all at the lowest possible prices.

Now with locations on Harvard Avenue in Cleveland and Hayden Avenue in East Cleveland, Silverman’s began in 1946 as Surplus Value Center, a single store at 46th and St. Clair. We later moved, expanded and adopted the name Surplus City for several years before changing it to Silverman’s in 1969.

It all started just after WWII, when Marcus Silverman enlisted the help of his brothers, Dave, Irv and Sid, and began selling government surplus goods. Customers came from all over the city for everyday items (which, back then, were often hard to find) like underwear, socks, shirts, and rainwear, as well as specialty items, like telescopes, binoculars and tools.

As government surplus goods diminished and consumer products became more widely available, the Silvermans went out of their way to continue offering hard-to-find items their customers wanted. As times changed, they added women’s and children’s clothing, household goods and other items to the inventory. The stores grew to become full-line department stores, all the while keeping prices low.

Now run by Alan Silverman and Jamie Stadlin (Alan's son-in-law), Silverman’s department stores will continue to adapt to keep our customers satisfied.
